Where the condos are

Spruce Cliff is the most apartment-heavy community in the sector: about three in four of its homes were apartments in the 2019 and 2021 counts. Lincoln Park, home to Mount Royal University, is also mostly apartments. Glamorgan and Glenbrook each have hundreds of apartment and townhouse units, and most of their homes were built before 1981.

Signal Hill and Patterson, built mostly in the 1980s and 1990s, have several hundred apartment and townhouse units each, and about a third of homes in Discovery Ridge, built mostly in the 2000s, are apartments. Currie Barracks and Garrison Green sit on the former CFB Calgary base, redeveloped by Canada Lands Company, and Currie's townhomes and condo apartments were nearly all built since 2011.

Blue Line, MAX Teal and Stoney Trail

The Blue Line's west leg opened in December 2012, with stations at Westbrook, 45 Street, Sirocco and 69 Street, the end of the line. Westbrook station is beside Westbrook Mall. MAX Teal buses run from Westbrook to Mount Royal University, Rockyview General Hospital and Heritage station, ending at Douglas Glen.

The West Calgary Ring Road, the final section of Stoney Trail, opened on December 19, 2023, completing the 101-kilometre ring road around the city.

University and parks

Mount Royal University has been on its Lincoln Park campus since 1972. Battalion Park, a 93-hectare park, is on the hillside of Signal Hill.

Edworthy Park runs along the south side of the Bow River and includes the Douglas Fir Trail. North Glenmore Park borders the north side of the Glenmore Reservoir, and Griffith Woods Park, a 93-hectare natural park on the Elbow River, is in Discovery Ridge.

What to check before you buy here

Most homes in Glamorgan and Glenbrook were built before 1981. Alberta requires condo corporations to renew their reserve fund study at least every five years, so compare the latest study with upcoming work, and request documents in writing; the corporation must respond within 10 days. Council has approved the Westbrook Communities Local Area Plan, which guides growth and change in Wildwood, Spruce Cliff, Westgate, Rosscarrock, Glendale and Glenbrook and sets policy for future redevelopment there.

Discovery Ridge, beside the Elbow River, was under an evacuation order during the June 2013 flood; check any address there on the City's flood mapping tool. In Currie and other communities still being built, Alberta's new home warranty covers the building envelope for five years and major structural parts for ten, so ask how much remains.
